Ghost Rider is the name of several fictional supernatural antiheroes appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Marvel had previously used the name for a Western character whose name was later changed to Phantom Rider.

The first supernatural Ghost Rider is stunt motorcyclist Johnny Blaze, who, in order to save the life of his father, agreed to give his soul to "Satan" (later revealed to be an arch-demon named Mephisto). At night and when around evil, Blaze finds his flesh consumed by hellfire, causing his head to become a flaming skull. He rides a fiery motorcycle and wields blasts of hellfire from his body, usually from his skeletal hands. He eventually learns he has been bonded with the demon Zarathos. Blaze starred in the series from 1972–1983.

The subsequent Ghost Rider series (1990–98) featured Danny Ketch as a new Ghost Rider. After his sister was injured by ninja gangsters, Ketch came in contact with a motorcycle that had somehow been mystically enchanted to contain the essence of a Spirit of Vengeance. Blaze reappeared in this 1990s series as a supporting character, and it was later revealed that Danny and his sister were Johnny Blaze's long lost siblings. In 2000s comics, Blaze again became the Ghost Rider, succeeding Ketch. In 2013, Robbie Reyes became Ghost Rider as part of the Marvel NOW! initiative.

Nicolas Cage starred as the Johnny Blaze iteration of the character in the 2007 film Ghost Rider and the sequel Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 2012. Gabriel Luna currently plays the Robbie Reyes version in the television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Ghost Rider (2007)

On February 16, 2007, Columbia Pictures released the movie Ghost Rider, starring Nicolas Cage as the adult Johnny Blaze and Matt Long as a teen. The character faces Blackheart and his father, Mephistopheles.

Ghost Rider is a 2007 American supernatural superhero film written and directed by Mark Steven Johnson. It is based on the character of the same name appearing in Marvel Comics. The film stars Nicolas Cage as Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze with supporting roles done by Eva Mendes, Wes Bentley, Sam Elliott, Donal Logue, Matt Long, and Peter Fonda.

The film was met with negative reviews by critics and Ghost Rider fans but was a success at the box office, earning $228.7 million on a $110 million budget. Ghost Rider was released theatrically on February 16, 2007 in the United States by Columbia Pictures. Ghost Rider was released on DVD, Blu-ray Disc and UMD on June 12, 2007 by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. A sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, was released on February 17, 2012, with Cage reprising his role.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2012)

Nicolas Cage reprised the role in a sequel, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, released February 17, 2012 in 3-D. Here the character is recruited by a sect to save a boy named Danny from being possessed by Roarke (a form of Mephistopheles who is also his father) while fighting Blackout.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (also known as Ghost Rider 2 or Ghost Rider 2: Spirit of Vengeance) is a 2012 American 3D supernatural superhero film based on the Marvel Comics antihero Ghost Rider. It is a stand-alone sequel to the 2007 film Ghost Rider and features Nicolas Cage returning to his starring role as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider with supporting roles portrayed by Ciarán Hinds (replacing Peter Fonda), Violante Placido, Johnny Whitworth, Christopher Lambert, and Idris Elba. The film was directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, from a screenplay written by David S. Goyer, Scott M. Gimple and Seth Hoffman. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance was released in theaters on February 17, 2012 in 3D and 2D.

Critical reception was largely negative; critics and fans criticized the script, CGI, and acting. Despite this, the film grossed more than $132 million against its $57 million budget. Nicolas Cage has said that he is "done" with the Ghost Rider films and a planned sequel was cancelled.

In May of 2013, the film rights to Ghost Rider reverted to Marvel Studios from Sony Pictures, although it was also confirmed that there are no immediate plans to produce another film featuring the character in the immediate future.

Agents of SHIELD: Ghost Rider (2016)

(First 3 Seasons Available on Netflix)

In July of 2016, it was announced that the Ghost Rider mantle would make its Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the 4th season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Marketing had teased at the introduction of the Spirit of Vengeance, and the studio confirmed via San Diego Comic-Con, that the Ghost Rider will appear. The Robbie Reyes incarnation of Ghost Rider, portrayed by actor Gabriel Luna, features as a recurring character for the season; influencing the season's marketing subtitle, Ghost Rider, a first for the TV series. In October of 2016, Luna discussed that there are potential plans for Reyes to feature in his own TV series, following his introduction in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

Ghost Rider on TV

In the X-Men: The Animated Series first season finale, Professor X scans Gambit's memories and sees Ghost Rider, apparently approaching Gambit.

The Danny Ketch version of Ghost Rider appeared in the Fantastic Four episode "When Calls Galactus" voiced by Richard Grieco. He helps the Fantastic Four and Thor when Galactus plans to feed on Earth.

The Danny Ketch version of Ghost Rider appears in Incredible Hulk animated series on UPN, voiced by Richard Grieco. It was due to his usage on the UPN cartoons that caused a planned appearance on Spider-Man to be rejected. The episode would have pitted Ghost Rider and Spider-Man against Mysterio and Dormammu. Allegedly, these two appearances were also meant to serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential "Ghost Rider" animated series.

The Johnny Blaze version of Ghost Rider appears in the Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. episode "Spirit of Vengeance", voiced by Fred Tatasciore. This version is able to haunt and take control vehicles of all sizes, visualized by the vehicles catching fire and allowing weapons, such as some tanks he took over, to shoot fireballs. Unlike other versions of the Ghost Rider, this one could generate electricity and lightning from blue fire, as well as create a vortex of lightning that cured Abomination of his gamma and transformed him back into a human. However, like other versions, this one was able to make portals to other dimensions to appear on walls and other surfaces, such as a mountainside.

"Agents of SHIELD: Ghost Rider" Episodes

The fourth season of the American television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (promoted as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Ghost Rider), based on the Marvel Comics organization S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division), revolves around the character of Phil Coulson and his team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, as well as their allies, as they deal with various enhanced individuals following the signing of the Sokovia Accords. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. The season is produced by ABC Studios, Marvel Television, and Mutant Enemy Productions, with Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jeffrey Bell serving as showrunners.

The season was ordered in March 2016, and production began that July. Alongside Clark Gregg, who reprises his role as Coulson from the film series, principal cast members Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Henry Simmons return from previous seasons while John Hannah was promoted to the principal cast after appearing in a recurring role in season three. This season deals with how the film Captain America: Civil War affects the series, and introduces recurring guest star Gabriel Luna as the mystical Robbie Reyes / Ghost Rider to coincide with the film Doctor Strange, which explores mysticism in the MCU.

The first episode premiered at a screening on September 19, 2016, with the season, scheduled for 22 episodes, airing on ABC beginning on September 20, 2016. The premiere debuted to 3.58 million viewers, down from previous season premieres but average for the series.

Episode #1 "The Ghost" - September 20, 2016

Former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Daisy Johnson, now the vigilante "Quake", is hunting gang affiliates of the terrorist group Watchdogs in Los Angeles when Aryan Brotherhood members are murdered by the fiery "Ghost Rider". Agents Phil Coulson and Mack, who were forbidden from searching for Johnson by new S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Jeffrey Mace, are tipped off to her location by Agent Melinda May. Agent Leo Fitz discovers that S.H.I.E.L.D. ally Holden Radcliffe has created the android AIDA, and agrees to help perfect her. He keeps this from his girlfriend Agent Jemma Simmons, who is in the Director's inner circle. Simmons discovers that Coulson and Mack are investigating Johnson, and orders May to stop them. She arrives to find them surveilling Chinese gangsters who bought a weapon off the Brotherhood: a mystical figure, who turns the gang members berserk, and secretly infects May as well. Johnson tracks down the Ghost Rider, but he defeats her. She later sees his human form, Robbie Reyes, looking after his disabled brother Gabe.

Episode #2 "Meet the New Boss"
September 27, 2016

S.H.I.E.L.D. and Johnson independently investigate the figure, an apparent ghost of a woman named Lucy Bauer, both concluding that she worked at an abandoned facility, Momentum Energy. Johnson confronts Reyes again, and he once more overpowers her. Restraining her, Reyes searches Johnson's belongings and discovers her research on Momentum. He leaves, and Johnson escapes her restraints. As Mace plans to officially announce S.H.I.E.L.D. as a legitimate organization again, the infected May grows increasingly paranoid, seeing all people as monsters, and eventually attacking other agents. Mace restrains May with his Inhuman strength, and promises to take care of her. Mack and Fitz arrive at Momentum to find more ghosts, who attempt to blow it up with them inside. Ghost Rider intervenes, destroying one of the ghosts, and Johnson arrives to stop S.H.I.E.L.D. from taking him in. Rather than rejoin S.H.I.E.L.D., Johnson agrees to work with Reyes, who believes that the actions of the ghosts and Watchdogs may be tied to him.

Episode #3 "Uprising" - October 11, 2016

Inhuman S.H.I.E.L.D. asset Elena Rodriguez is caught in a blackout in Miami. Reyes and Johnson are caught in another in Los Angeles. A group claiming to be the Inhuman resistance, fighting registration with the Sokovia Accords, take responsibility. Reyes explains that his uncle, Eli Morrow, was imprisoned for causing an explosion at Momentum that apparently created the ghosts; he believes that atoning for Morrow's sins will pay his debt to the Devil, and rid Reyes of the Ghost Rider. At the Reyes' house, Gabe realizes that Johnson is Quake and asks her to leave Robbie alone. Radcliffe and Simmons 'cure' May by killing and reviving her. Coulson, Mack, and Fitz save Rodriguez from a group of Watchdogs, and find the EMP that caused the blackout - it was set off by the Watchdogs, who had access to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s list of registered Inhumans, and have backing from Senator Rota Nadeer, whose brother is encased in an Inhuman terrigen cocoon. Hoping to assuage public fears of the Inhumans, Mace announces the return of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Episode #4 "Let Me Stand Next to Your Fire"
October 18, 2016

Johnson forces Simmons to help track the Watchdogs' actions. They discover that the group hacked an Inhuman's monitoring device, and race to save the next Inhuman on the list. Coulson visits Morrow in prison, but gets no answers. Reyes arrives to talk to Morrow, and Mack recognizes him as the Ghost Rider. They capture Reyes, and earn his trust. AIDA supervises May's recovery, as a Turing test by Radcliffe. Johnson and Simmons find the Inhuman J.T. James and destroy his monitor. Reyes visits Morrow, and learns that the Momentum explosion was caused by a group of scientists studying the Darkhold, a mysterious book. Only Lucy's husband Joseph, whom Morrow had put in a coma trying to stop the experiments, survived. James betrays Johnson - he hates being an Inhuman, and gave the Watchdogs access to his monitor. Coulson, Mack, and Reyes save Johnson and Simmons, alerted by the monitor's destruction. They then get May to help find the Darkhold, and when Simmons sees AIDA she deduces her true nature.
