The Inhumans

The Inhumans are a fictional race of superhumans which appears in various comic book series published by Marvel Comics.

The comic book series of this name has usually focused more specifically on the adventures of the Inhuman Royal Family, and many people associate the name "Inhumans" with this particular team of super-powered characters.

The Inhumans first appeared in Fantastic Four #45 (December 1965), though members Medusa and Gorgon appeared in earlier issues of that series (#36 and #44, respectively). Their home, the city of Attilan, was first mentioned years earlier, in a Tuk the Caveboy story written and drawn by Jack Kirby that appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941). The city was described as the home of a race that was evolutionarily advanced when human beings were still in the Stone Age.

In August 2014, it was reported that Marvel was moving forward with the development of an Inhumans film, with a screenplay written by Joe Robert Cole. In October 2014, Marvel Studios confirmed Inhumans, with a release date of November 2, 2018. The date was later pushed back to July 12, 2019.

Inhumans TV (2017-)

Marvel's Inhumans, or simply Inhumans, is an upcoming American television series developed for ABC, based on the Marvel Comics race of the same name. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films and other television series of the franchise. The series is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television, with IMAX Corporation as a financing partner and Scott Buck serving as showrunner.

The series is centered on Black Bolt, portrayed by Anson Mount, and other members of the Inhuman Royal Family. Iwan Rheon, Serinda Swan, Eme Ikwuakor, Isabelle Cornish, Ken Leung, Ellen Woglom, Sonya Balmores, and Mike Moh also star. Marvel Studios announced an Inhumans film in 2014 as part of their Phase Three slate of films, with the species first introduced to the MCU in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The film was removed from Marvel Studios' slate in April 2016, and the Inhumans series was announced that November, to be partly filmed using IMAX cameras. Buck joined the series in October, and Mount was cast in February 2017. Filming took place from March to June 2017, at the former Naval Air Station Barbers Point airfield in Kalaeloa, Hawaii.

Inhumans on Agents of SHIELD (2015)

The Inhumans are introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., revealed in "Who You Really Are" as part of an experiment by a rogue faction of the Kree to create genetically altered soldiers on various planets. The Inhumans are only surviving specimens as the faction were killed by the Kree Emperor, continuing the Terrigenesis with the remaining Diviners. The episode "The Things We Bury" featured a slow-aging Inhuman named Jiaying (portrayed by Dichen Lachman) who helped young Inhumans control their abilities as revealed in the episode "Aftershocks." She was the wife of Calvin Zabo before she was killed in the vivisecting experiments conducted by Daniel Whitehall.

In the episode "What They Become", a recurring character named Raina, believing she was meant for greater purpose, causes the Terrigenesis of herself and Skye, revealed to be an Inhuman herself. In "Aftershocks," Raina is horrified to find herself in a thorn-covered form (and suffering from constant pains) and attempted suicide after Calvin abandoned her. However, Raina ends up being saved by an eyeless teleporter Inhuman named Gordon (played by Jamie Harris), who was alerted to her Terrigenesis. The Terrigenesis also alerted a Kree who attempted to kill Skye and erase the Inhumans' existence in "Who You Really Are". The episode "Afterlife" introduces another Inhuman named Lincoln Campbell (played by Luke Mitchell) who helps Skye understand her heritage and has the ability to electrically-charge anything. It is shown that Jiaying had somehow survived Daniel Whitehall's experiments and has resumed training the recently-transformed Inhumans starting with Raina.

The television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has introduced multiple Inhumans to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Among these Inhumans are:

  • Daisy "Skye" Johnson: A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who has the power to manipulate vibration following her exposure to the Terrigen mists. She is able to tap into the vibrational energy of everything around her.
  • Raina: A former member of Project Centipede who after the Terrigenesis became a thorn-covered Inhuman with claws. She has also gained enhanced strength and durability. Her new form is apparently uncomfortable even for her, as her insides feel malformed.
  • Gordon: An eyeless Inhuman, with abilities such as teleportation and force field generation of reflective blue energy.
  • Jiaying: Skye's mother and Calvin Zabo's wife who helped new Inhumans manage their new found powers and appearances. She had the power of longevity which was realized by aging Hydra member Daniel Whitehall, who vivisected and experimented on her living body to obtain the secret to eternal youth. She somehow survived the experiments as seen in "Aftershock" and resumes helping the new Inhumans.
  • Lincoln Campbell: An Inhuman who can electrically-charge anything.

Agents of SHIELD: Season 1 (2014)

(Entire First Season 2014 Available on Netflix)

The first season sees S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Phil Coulson putting together a small team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents to handle strange new cases. They investigate Project Centipede and their leader, "The Clairvoyant", eventually uncovering that Project Centipede is backed by Hydra, who has infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.

The complete first season was first released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 9, 2014, and became available for streaming on Netflix on November 20, 2014.

Agents of SHIELD Rises Season2

Agents of SHIELD: Season 2 (2015)

(2015 SHIELD Season 2 on ABC TV & Hulu)

In the second season, after the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D., Coulson and his team look to restore trust from the government and public, while dealing with the much more powerful Hydra organization, and the revelation of the Inhumans following the appearance of Skye's father.

Chloe Bennet as Daisy "Skye" Johnson:

A civilian hacktivist recruit, revealed to be an Inhuman. When the character of Skye was introduced to the series, it was always intended that she would be the MCU version of Johnson, as Tancharoen explained, "there are always the series of clearances, but we always knew we wanted to evolve Skye into something else [Earthquake]. Daisy Johnson was the main character that we wanted to go for. We got confirmation on that very early on, so we’ve been on that track ever since." Bennet noted on the character, "I think she’s always someone who will wear her heart on her sleeve, but I think she’s much smarter about it now, if that makes any sense. I don’t think she’s the type of person who can halfass anything, and that includes emotions. If she feels something, she feels something. But she knows how to control it more". Talking about the changes to the character after it was revealed that she was Daisy Johnson and an Inhuman, Tancharoen said "With this discovery will come some consequences, especially in her relationships with everyone around her, specifically Coulson ... Needless to say, it’s going to be a very complex, emotional journey for her."
