Transformers is a series of American science fiction action films directed by Michael Bay, and based on the toys created by Hasbro and Tomy. The first film, Transformers, was released in 2007, the second, Revenge of the Fallen, in 2009, the third, Dark of the Moon in 2011, and the fourth, Age of Extinction in 2014. A Untitled Transformers 5 is scheduled for a 2016 release without Bay directing.
Transformers is a 2007 American science fiction action film based on the Transformers toy line. The film, which combines computer animation with live-action, is directed by Michael Bay, with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. It is the first installment of the live-action Transformers film series. It stars Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky, a teenager who gets caught up in a war between the heroic Autobots and the villainous Decepticons, two factions of alien robots who can disguise themselves by transforming into everyday machinery, primarily vehicles. The Autobots intend to use the AllSpark, the object that created their robotic race, in an attempt to rebuild Cybertron and end the war while the Decepticons desire control of the AllSpark with the intention of using it to build an army by giving life to the machines of Earth. Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, Anthony Anderson, Megan Fox, Rachael Taylor, John Turturro, and Jon Voight also star while voice actors Peter Cullen and Hugo Weaving voice Optimus Prime and Megatron respectively.
Transformers received mixed to positive reviews and was a box office success. It is the forty-fifth most successful film released and the fifth most successful of 2007, grossing approximately US$709 million worldwide. The film won four awards from the Visual Effects Society and was nominated for three Academy Awards, for Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. The performance of Shia Labeouf was praised by Empire, and Peter Cullen's reprisal of Optimus Prime from the 1980s was well received by fans.
A sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, was released on June 24, 2009. Despite mostly negative reviews, it was a commercial success and grossed more than its predecessor. A third film, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, was released on June 29, 2011, in 3-D and went on to gross over $1 billion, despite receiving mixed reviews. A fourth film Transformers: Age of Extinction, was released on June 27, 2014, which also grossed over $1 billion, though it got mixed to negative reviews. A fifth film as of now titled Transformers 5 is scheduled for a summer 2016 release.
Untitled Transformers 5 is the fifth film in the series and a sequel to Transformers 4. Paramount Pictures' Rob Moore stated that there have been talks for a Transformers 5 and Transformers 6. On June 18, 2014, Paramount Pictures Senior Vice President Edward Ryan promised a fifth Transformers film to be released on June 24, 2016. On October 31, 2014, Michael Bay announced that he will be moving on from the franchise and will pass the baton to another director. However, during an interview with MTV in December 2014 while promoting his film The Gambler, Walhberg confirmed his return for the sequel.
Transformers 5 (2016)
Paramount Pictures' Rob Moore stated that there have been talks for a Transformers 5 and Transformers 6. On June 18, 2014, Paramount Pictures Senior Vice President Edward Ryan promised a fifth Transformers film to be released on June 24, 2016. On October 31, 2014, Michael Bay announced that he will be producing the film instead of directing and will pass the baton to another director. However, during an interview with MTV in December 2014 while promoting his film The Gambler, Wahlberg confirmed his return for the sequel. Nicola Peltz and Jack Reynor will return. Director Jonathan liebesman will replace Bay as Director but Bay will still produce it.
Transformers + G.I. Joe Crossover Movie
On March 28, 2013, during the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura announced that he is open to doing a G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover. On July 26, 2013, G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu stated that he is also interested in directing a Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover film. di Bonaventura stated on June 23, 2014 that a crossover was not likely to happen. However, he later stated that a crossover was still a possibility. |
